Humes recently achieved Climate Active carbon neutral certification for concrete box culverts installed on new rail track and road connections along the 103km Parkes to Narromine section of the Inland Rail project. Humes offset the emissions of more than 22,600 tonnes of precast concrete culverts that are manufactured at Humes’ Tamworth-based facility, which equates to 7,000 tonnes of carbon emissions (CO2e).

Carbon neutrality of the box culverts was certified by Climate Active. This means Parkes to Narromine is the first Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia (ISCA) rated project to hold this accomplishment.

The Climate Active certification was streamlined by the fact that Humes Tamworth had developed an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) earlier this year. start2see provided a one-stop shop service, as we developed the EPD for Humes Tamworth, and as a Climate Active Registered Consultant we also guided Humes through the carbon neutral certification process.

We are now starting to see more interest from building and construction material suppliers to supply carbon neutral products. A verified EPD can provide the basis (the carbon footprint) for carbon neutral certification and we expect more businesses to follow this pathway.
