Geo40 has successfully developed sustainable technology for the recovery of low-carbon, colloidal silica from geothermal fluids at the Ohaaki Northern Plant (a geothermal power plant) in New Zealand. Geo40 asked start2see to estimate the carbon footprint of their colloidal silica products, using a streamlined LCA approach. We were able to do so, as well as quickly establish the key contributors to the carbon footprint. The analysis showed the importance of the carbon accounting approach (for electricity) and the effect this has on the colloidal silica’s footprint. All-in-all, this provides Geo40 with a more robust understanding of their product’s greenhouse gas intensity.
