Earlier this year start2see delivered the updated materials calculator that is used to determine the environmental impacts of materials used on infrastructure projects in Australia. It is great to hear that the update has been well received by the Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia (ISCA) and the users of the calculator.

Contact start2see if you have any questions regarding the calculator or if you are interested in how LCA can be used to benefit your sector.
start2see is proud to announce we have completed the update of the principal infrastructure rating tool in Australia. The IS Materials Calculator v1.2 is now available for download from the ISCA website.
start2see would like to thank the Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia (ISCA) for the opportunity to assist in driving sustainability further in the infrastructure sector. The updated calculator marks a significant improvement in the use of life cycle information in the sector. Nonetheless, all stakeholders understand that this must be an ever-evolving process. Future updates will continue to improve the calculator. Have a look for yourself and let us (and ISCA) know what improvements you would like to see.
Note: New materials can be added to the calculator by submitting data to AusLCI. start2see has assisted various organisations with this process and we would love to assist you too. Contact us to see what the best solution would be for you.
Rob Rouwette was invited to contribute to "The Green Perspective", CBRE’s global sustainability blog.
The blog outlines how building developers and occupiers in the Australasian region have a lot to gain from applying a life cycle thinking approach.
Rob Rouwette's experience and qualifications have been recognised by Environdec, allowing him to undertake independent third party verification of LCAs and related EPDs for the International EPD System and the Australasian EPD Programme.
We are registered as active in Australia, New Zealand and China (http://www.environdec.com/en/Creating-EPD/List-of-verifiers).
We do operate outside of these locations upon request as well, so contact us to discuss how our experience can assist you with either developing an LCA plus EPD(s) or reviewing your LCA and EPD(s) according to best practice standards.
BlueScope Steel is the first company to have published an Australian EPD under the Australasian EPD Programme. The Environmental Product Declaration of Hot Rolled Coil meets the best practice European EN 15804 standard.
start2see is proud to have assisted BlueScope Steel with the verification of its LCA and EPD.
Client testimonial: "Rob, I have to say that you have done a really thorough job and have been very balanced in terms of being reasonable in your expectations. My reflections are that this process has certainly added value, so thanks very much for your efforts."

Reinforced Concrete Pipes Australia (RCPA) is a national supplier of vertically cast, thin wall steel reinforced concrete pipe and eCP geopolymer concrete pipe. RCPA believed that its geopolymer pipes have a significantly lower environmental impact compared to its standard concrete pipes. Life cycle assessment is the method to examine the environmental perfomance and substantiate any claims.
start2see assisted RCPA by undertaking a life cycle assessment of no less than eighty of its pipe products. As a result, RCPA can confidently claim that its eCP geopolymer pipes on average result in 45% lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to standard reinforced concrete pipes of similar diameter.

Rob Rouwette was the first person in Australia to achieve Certified Professional status by the American Center for Life Cycle Assessment (in 2011).
In 2015, the Australian Life Cycle Assessment Society (ALCAS) and Life Cycle Association of New Zealand (LCANZ) adopted the American LCA Certified Professional scheme. Australian and New Zealand LCA professionals can now have their knowledge of LCA practice independently tested. The certificates are mutually recognised across the participating countries. start2see is an environmental consultancy specialising in life cycle thinking and life cycle assessments. Based in Melbourne, start2see was created by Rob Rouwette.
start2see refers to the information being uncovered when undertaking Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). LCA lets you see beyond your horizon (organisation / product boundaries); a whole new viewpoint that uncovers new opportunities.
start2see also refers to the initiation of change. As environmental pressures are growing, change is needed for society to become sustainable. Full life cycle impacts need to be taken into account if we want to understand how we affect sustainability and how we can make better environmental decisions that will take us in the right direction.
To increase the uptake of life cycle techniques through project consulting, coaching, training and co-operation. Ultimately, start2see is about embedding Life Cycle Thinking in decision making processes.
"You can't manage what you don't measure"
